HIDRI Day 7
Lucky to be back at the High Desert Research Institute composing this blog post. Dr. K, Becca and I did the Apple Tree Canyon Trail II. It's an ass-kicker to get up to some fantastic views of White Sands, the San Andres Mountains, the Organ Mountains and the Franklin Mountains, but well worth the effort. This year--with about 1.2 miles left on the hike--we got caught in a tremendously dangerous thunderstorm. In addition to getting absolutely drenched, we were nearly fried by nearby lightning strikes. We drove back to the institute, nearly 30 miles, in an out-and-out gully washer. Nevertheless, we got some good photos before the rain.
