In this bottom photo you can see a ribbon of green in the middle distance; this is the riparian (Latin for "riverbank") and agricultural area that runs along both sides of the Rio Grande River as it passes through the Mesilla Valley of southern New Mexico.

Hot, Dry AND Windy
You can get an idea from these photos about just how dry it's been here in the Chihuahuan Desert, but you can't really tell how hot it is. So I'll tell you: it's been very hot, temps hovering at or above 100 degrees. And now it's windy again. We've had a particularly windy Spring, stretches of consecutive days with winds constant at 30 to 35 mph, and gusts to 50+ mph. This is a really bad combination--high winds and bone-dry earth. There's been a lot of dust and sand in the air so far this year.
