Best of Hikes, Worst of Hikes

Soaptrees and the Organs
Dr. K had an appointment this morning so couldn't come with Frio, Willow and me on the morning hike.  Good thing.  It was absolutely freezing out there:  29F with a windchill of 17F.

The first part of the trek was brutal, the wind battering us as we descended LDR-A arroyo.  But as soon as we got into Left Branch Arroyo and started our ascent conditions changed drastically.  The sun was shining brightly and we were out of the wind.  I was able to remove my nose and mouth protector and breathe normally.

Things didn't get bad again until we crested the hill west of Right Branch Arroyo and got back into the full force of the bitterly cold wind.  But from there it was a quick jaunt to the waiting CR-V.

The most astonishing thing about the hike, though, was the Red-tailed Hawk I spotted perched atop the lone Soaptree on the hill west of the Organ Mountains.  I don't know if I've ever seen a hawk out here at this time of year in such brutal conditions.
