A brisk, Sunday-morning hike near Tortugas Mountain always reveals some spectacular sights. A clatch of yuccas still wearing last year's fashion catches the eye and makes one wonder how long until they are sporting spring flowers. A glance across the desert to the mountain's shoulder reveals the trail that circumnavigates it. The photos were taken while we were hiking one of the single-track mountain bike paths that loops out away from Tortugas--a pretty good aerobic workout.
There are many mountain bike trails around the mountain, and a few days ago Research Associate Becca and I met a young guy who was about to ride the main road up to the observatory. Becca was so infatuated with the guy that she chased after him for a short distance until I called her off. This "herding" instinct of hers comes from her lineage; her father was a sheep herder here on the border, and her mother worked on a cattle ranch in Australia before immigrating to this country.
