I first saw this collared lizard resting in the shade of a desert willow tree. In short order it began to hunt for insects, even scaling the tree in search of food. Obviously, it had been eating well; it was about three inches thick at its girth and about ten inches long.
I once saw a collared lizard about this size standing on one of the walls here at COC picking off mud dauber wasps that had a nearby nest. Apparently the collared lizard can break the skin if it bites you, but it's hard to imagine how you can get bitten since they quickly flee when they see a human being.

Although I don't usually like reptiles, this lizard sure is beautiful. It's amazing that they can actually eat bees.
