Because of severe drought in the desert Southwest, many trees are stressed. In our section of the Sacramento Mountains in southern New Mexico the piñon pines are suffering from piñon needle scale insects. In these photos, the browned-out areas of the forest are piñons seriously affected by disease. We have many dying trees on our property in High Rolls, an area of the mountains especially hard hit. It's a sobering reality. If the drought persists, the effect will be devastating.
