Starting the Week

Where shadow meets light
There was a thin coating of ice on the car windows when Becca and I left the ranch this morning.  Later, as we were hiking west of Tortugas Mountain I could feel the humidity in the air.  It wasn't uncomfortable, though, because the temperature was 28 F.  There weren't too many people around the mountain, but we did hike the last half of the inner loop trail with JC and Shaque.  It's a real pleasure to see Shaque (all 15 years 10 months of him) bounding around the desert like a guy half his age.

I'm not sure why anyone would leave a U.S. Air Force flag here

It's so nice to hear birdsong, especially in the dead of winter.

Nice image of the Curve-billed thrasher looking over its shoulder, Packrat.

I would have taken that flag with me and carried it out of the desert, but perhaps you were only a short way into your hike when you came across it and didn't want to carry it with you the whole way.

The partially obscured Organ Mountains confirmed your supposition about the high humidity.

We had yet another significant snowstorm yesterday with 8 inches of wet, heavy snow; I've honestly lost count of how many we've had so far. Tonight we're in for a wintry mix, then considerable sleeting tomorrow. And, last but hardly least, the National Weather Service has forecast a coastal storm for this coming weekend with the potential to deliver "significant" snow Sunday into Monday. This has been, and continues to be, one miserable winter here.

Sorry to hear about the bad weather, Scott. This looks to be a pretty uncomfortable winter for you easterners. Can't say I miss being back there when you're having storms like that.
