There is no better way to spend a birthday morning than on a hike with Research Associate Becca, who thoroughly enjoyed herself. Fortunately, she didn't chase a jackrabbit like she did yesterday. We were on the Monte Vista side of Tortugas Mountain this morning, taking photos while we enjoyed the sights. The light was just perfect for photography. Take a look.
From the shape of its body and its distinctive song, we determined that this bird is a Loggerhead Shrike.
This bird, sitting at the top of a yucca, is a Curved-Bill Thrasher.
To me (again, not an expert), this looks like Umbrella-Wort, a member of the Four-O'Clock Family.
How's this for a close-up shot of the Organ Mountains?
