The Heelers with Dr. K |
Dr. K, the Heelers and I were about two-thirds of the way through a longish morning trek when we surprisingly encountered a woman I know, Lisa, and her dog, Clover. Clover is a smaller replica of our former dog, Becca, and the two of them got along swimmingly. Not so with Clover, Frio and Willow.
What might have been a knockdown-drag-out dog fight was avoided only through strenuous efforts on the part of Dr. K, Lisa and me, all of us restraining our particular canine. I was very disappointed in the behavior of our two Heelers. Lisa said--as she and Clover departed--"Maybe they'll get on better next time." Doubtful, unless they respond positively to rigorous training on my part.
I took control of the two leads after that and made the pups walk right next to me on the left and right for the duration of our trek. Frio was very good about staying at my side and not pulling, but Willow kept trying to exert her will against my wishes. She finally gave up, though, and kept in line the rest of the way.
It's been so long since I've had a dog or dogs misbehave in that manner that I reverted to some inappropriate behavior myself, most notably pulling back on the the leashes to restrain them rather than leading them away either to the left or right when encountering other animals. I'll remember that next time. Also I'll have to refresh my memory by doing research on proper methods of desensitizing dogs to other hounds.

Pretty photos of the mountains that still have a bit of snow on them.
