A Taste of Desert Brutality

Common Nighthawk
It was just plain hot in the desert this morning.  There wasn't a breath of wind to ameliorate the heat.  Becca and I did a moderately-long hike, and we suffered all the way.  She took at least five shade breaks, which is pretty unusual for her.  As usual, though, we very much enjoyed the sights of the Chihuahuan Desert, including a Common Nighthawk that didn't seem overly perturbed by our presence.  I've read that even though Nighthawks have tiny beaks they have incredibly large mouths.

Desert marigolds are some of my favorite flowers.

Thanks for the update on the road closure situation, Packrat.

This set of images is great. The only time we see Nighthawks here is during migration (actually, they should be coming through any evening now, since they appear in late August and early September). They generally hang around for a few evenings, and then they're off to points unknown. Their annual appearance is one of my favorite natural history landmarks (maybe because it signals that another brutal summer is coming to an end).
