Old Haunts

Becca and I did a hike in a section of the desert where we hadn't trekked for about a year.  It's cold enough now so we don't have to worry about bushwhacking into a rattler's territory, though we have encountered rattlesnakes as late as November.  The top three images here were taken of birds in our Desert Willow tree, a frequent magnet for Ladderback Woodpeckers, Verdins, sparrows and doves.  And rabbits--both cottontails and jacks--love to eat the flower blossoms that have fallen to the desert floor.

A Ladderback Woodpecker would be a life-lister for me, so I guess we'll have to visit when we become Westerners; just make sure a Ladderback will show up when we're there! (Don't worry; it won't be for at least 4-1/2 years, Packrat--plenty of time to clean the house.)
