High Country Retreat

Today was a rare weekday off for the staff at COC as we took a much-needed retreat to the Sacramento Mountains here in southern New Mexico. Unfortunately, George had to stay behind and file paperwork. Before lunch, Dr. K, Research Associate Becca and I hiked the Osha Trail outside of the village of Cloudcroft. This is a photo of the village of Cloudcroft, situated at an elevation of 8663 feet.
Stately pines stand sentry on the spectacular Osha Trail.
A poor photo of a dashing elk; we saw three females (cows).
The discovery of this seashell on the trail seems to suggest that the area was once underwater.

I think this was the first time I had seen elk. They were very graceful, considering how big they are.

I'd like to see more pictures of cloudcroft someday...I've never been there.
