Sunday Outing

No, I'm not going to reveal that Research Associate Becca is gay; the "outing" I refer to is our Sunday morning hike at the base of Tortugas Mountain. We parked in the Monte Vista parking lot on the east side of the mountain and made our way clockwise halfway around the monolith. Tortugas is composed of limestone that was thrust up by violent terrestrial upheaveal about 30 million years ago. The first photo shows what the mountain is made of.

This picture was taken a bit further away from the mountain and it partially reveals its tortoise shape.

This is a photo of the Monte Vista parking lot, the pavillion the BLM built recently, the tower and the old observatory on top of the mountain.
