25F when Becca and I set off early on a morning hike today. We trekked for about a mile until we reached the sunshine, and, boy, was it welcome relief from the cold. After we headed west down Geothermal Road for a short distance we turned left across the lineworker program grounds, and then began bushwhacking in a southerly direction. It was a great excursion in that we discovered areas we'd not been in before, and I was able to capture a few images of these places. We struck across some pretty rough terrain until reaching the single-track on the west side of Tortugas Mountain, which we then followed back up into the higher foothills. Needless to say we didn't encounter any other outdoor enthusiasts in the outback, but we did bump into a man and woman hiking with their dog closer to the road to the mountaintop. Upon our return to the Sunset area I was surprised to see the parking lot there quite full, but there was a remarkable absence of human beings in the vicinity.

I like those two photos of the moon, Packrat. It sounds like a good morning--sunny, crisp and cold--for a desert hike.
