Blazing Sun and Reptiles

This & next:  Texas Horned Lizard
It felt hotter than yesterday when Dr. K, Willow, Frio and I set off on our morning hike; in fact, it felt so hot we decided to cut the outing short just as we entered the left branch arroyo.

Willow actually touched her nose to the Texas Horned Lizard pictured here before the rest of us even saw it, obviously due to its astonishing camouflage.

When we were approaching the ancient mesquite tree in the right branch arroyo I spotted a small Western Diamondback ahead of us.  I quickly put both Heelers back on their leads before we gave the rattler a wide berth.  It was quite agitated, assuming a defensive posture even though we were substantially distant from it.

After the snake encounter we made our way up the arroyo and over the small hill just west of the upper flatland road.

We found out later who slept here
