Out of the Sunset Lot

Headed upslope on Tortugas's west side
Becca and I left out of the Sunset Area parking lot this morning, and six other vehicles were already there.  Because we hiked into the high foothills we probably added a mile or so to our long trek.  For an early Monday morning it was quite crowded around Tortugas; we ran into mountain bikers, hikers and runners along the way.  And when we returned to the Sunset Area--through the ramada where two young women were eating breakfast--the parking lot was quite full.  I guess outdoor enthusiasts are getting early starts because it's been so hot for the past few days.

It's a lot easier to get an early start on a hike when the weather is this hot.

No trees. And the sun beats down. That looks so hot! I guess like sand at the beach, the heat also reflects off the ground.

It does beat down, Jacqui, and, at times, it's absolutely oppressive. Heat does reflect off the ground, and I often refer to the hot desert floor as a "skillet."
