How Hot is It?

It's almost too hot to stop to take photographs.  We're into another string of 100 + degree days, and while that's not rare it is somewhat unusual.  Our highs here in southern New Mexico are usually in the mid-to-high 90s.  I know, high 90s, low 100s: what's the difference?  Hot is hot.  This morning on the mountain we were fortunate to benefit from a constant wind that provided for evaporative cooling.  I was surprised to see lots out people out and about; many of them were teenagers jogging.  I suspect they're from the nearby Centennial High School track team.

Those teenage joggers probably don't feel the heat as much as us old-timers do.

Packrat: I sympathize with you in the heat. On our first full day in Colorado Springs (last Friday), Kali and I did a short walk through the Garden of the Gods. We wanted to do a longer hike, but by the time we were done with our short walk, temperatures were already in the low 90s, so we went shopping in quaint Old Colorado City instead (where we found a Zuni turkey fetish to add to our collection-we collect most anything "turkey" as long as it is of sufficiently high quality and interesting; no Thanksgiving platters--too common). By the end of the day, it had gotten to 94 and we were wiped out. Temperatures moderated since that first day, but we've had to deal with afternoon thunder showers which limit our hiking. Today, we moved from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins to visit our house in the foothills. The house is just as we left it, but we're going to need a tanker truck of herbicide to deal with the weeds outside.

Interesting account of your trip so far, Scott. Yes, the heat is on, and I'm not enjoying it very much. Sounds as if you two are suffering a bit as well. I wonder if you worry about your foothills house as much as I worry about our place in High Rolls when we're not there.

Packrat: I'll give you a full low down on the house in the foothills next week when life returns to "normal" and I'm back at home. Too crazy and busy right now. Today (Tuesday) we spent all morning and afternoon at the house pulling weeds, herbiciding weeds, and sweeping and dusting inside the house. None of our belongings are in the house (it's complete empty), so if anything happens to the house, we'll just get reimbursed by the insurance company. Quick answer: I don't worry about the house when we're not there, but I do think about it and it weighs heavily on me sometimes, so I try not to dwell on it. Tomorrow (Wednesday) we're off to Rocky Mountain National Park for a hike--and now we get in FREE because I have my Senior Pass (since I turned 62 last month and now I'm eligible) and Kali (and two other adults) can ride in on my coat tails, too!

I'll bet you'll have a wonderful time on your hike in Rocky Mountain National Park, Scott. Good trekking!
