This morning, Dr. K, Research Associate Becca and I were on the trail early, hiking the Tortugas Mountain trail in a counterclockwise fashion. The desert was simply awesome, with flowers blooming everywhere, a cooling breeze, and clear air. I took 57 photos of various sights, some of the shots good, some not. It will take a two-part post to display the best of them. First up, this spectacular flowering plant that I cannot yet identify. Check back for update. (See note below)*
Here is a late-blooming yucca.
Also, a late-blooming soaptree yucca.
Close-up of the showy yucca flowers.
I can't help posting still another shot of a near-perfect devil's claw, seed dispenser of the Unicorn Plant.
* (This unidentified plant is called Stingleaf [Cevallia sinuata.] Thanks to Wynn Anderson, Botanical Curator with the Chihuahuan Desert Gardens at the Centennial Museum at UTEP.)
