Cool Start

It rained overnight so the morning was refreshingly cool. Research Associate Becca and I set off early around Tortugas Mountain, and we came upon this vista (one of our favorites) after about twenty minutes.
This ancient yucca appears to be clinging to life at its very top.
The rest of it seems dead already.
This circular outline is the impression left by a rattlesnake that curled up and slept here. Fortunately for Becca and me, the snake was nowhere in sight.
What was in sight, though, was this pretty plant arrangement: hedgehog cactus, prickly pear cactus, creosote bush, and a dried yucca pod (upper left).
