Perfect Hiking Weather

Somebody on the trail before us had shoes with toes
Even though it's still early May in the Chihuahuan Desert you have to appreciate and take advantage of each and every cool day that comes around.  Such was the case this morning when the day dawned breezy and cool with a significant overcast, and Becca and I got out on the trail around Tortugas (Tortoise) Mountain as soon as  possible.  We put a lot of miles on our paws by doing a lengthy hike into the outback, where we saw two women--determined joggers--taking advantage of the weather, too.  Back near the trailhead, at the Sunset Parking area, cars were beginning to fill the lot, and we were content to have finished our long hike early, before the day started to warm up.

Looking for things of interest that might lie ahead

In some sections blue sky

In other areas rain looks imminent

Something Becca rarely does:  sit still

Putting some distance behind us

Yellow-ball Acacia flowers beginning to bloom

Prickly Pear Cactus flowers

That photo of the cactus blossom with the bee is striking.

Today's post is a study in yellow, Packrat.

We had temperatures in the low 80s (normal: 72) with high humidity on Friday, and a severe thunderstorm around 10 p.m. I'm already dreading summer, and this is just a "taste."

Scott: Generally I don't mind the hot, dry days of our desert summer, but when the "monsoon" season starts up in July and runs through September I find I really mind the humidity. At those times I always find myself wondering how I got through all those hot, humid summers in northeastern Ohio.
