You'd have thought Research Associate Becca was a puppy the way she was whining to get out of the office this morning. Fortunately, we were out on the trail early, stalking the desert on the west side of Tortugas Mountain. It was partly cloudy and cool, with a nice breeze, so we didn't suffer too much. On the mountain's flank we came upon this carpet of Plume Coldenia.
We took this long shot of Tortugas at the midpoint of the hike.
This little barrel had a showy flower display.
Closeup of the barrel blossoms; notice how the smaller ones that have not yet opened look like brightly-colored Easter eggs.

beautiful cactus. It's amazing how much green there is in the desert.
And the color of the flowers on the barrels are so pretty, too. I hope Research Associate Becca stopped sniffing the ground long enough to appreciate them.
