Wilderness/Recreation Area

http://www.lcsun-news.com/las_cruces-news/ci_24713961/senators-introduce-new-bill-protect-450-000-acres

The link is to a Las Cruces Sun-News article that details the bill submitted by New Mexico's two Democratic Senators, Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich, which would create the Organ Mountains/Desert Peaks National Monument, and also would create wilderness areas within the designation.  The bill asks for 450,000 acres to be protected.  Naturally the area's Republican representative, Steve Pearce (conservationist in name only) introduced a counter proposal that would protect a whopping 54,800 acres.  My feeling is that if Democrats hadn't introduced this legislation the Republicans would be perfectly happy having no national monument/wilderness areas at all.

Good luck! It would be so wonderful to have the Organ Mountains protected, but there seems to be no stomach for wilderness protection any longer.
