Dodging Rain Again

Sky to the southeast looks iffy
We have about a 50% of getting rain today, and this morning when Becca and I were doing a long trek west of Tortugas Mountain it seemed as if we might get wet.  Fortunately, we only got spit upon a few times, and that came from wind sweeping in from the southeast where it was obviously raining.  There were quite a few outdoor enthusiasts testing their luck avoiding bad weather.  We'll see how things hold up the rest of the day.  The Kangaroo Rat pictured below may have been killed by a Roadrunner we saw hanging about nearby.  Kangaroo Rats can live without consuming water, extracting much-needed liquid from dry seeds.  Their specialized kidneys allow them to excrete waste without eliminating water from their system.
Up around the bend

we get this look at the sky

Seems like we're heading right into the storm

Clouds pressing down on the southern Organs

Sun breaks through to color Tortugas

Conditions appear to be clearing

A miracle on the eastern horizon

What Becca was too curious about:  dead Kangaroo Rat

If the Kangaroo Rat were at my place,it probably would have been killed by being run over. I'm more and more convinced that my stewardship staff has run over the Soras we found this and last year by "baja-ing" through the fields in our maintenance ATV. (I hate the thing, but don't get me going.) And, our public driveway currently features one very small and one moderate-size squished garter snake--undoubtedly sunning themselves when they were run over.

Don't get me started on ATVs, Scott. I absolutely hate them, even when they're used responsibly by professionals. Besides the fact that they do untold damage (especially to fragile desert soils) I can barely stand to hear them coming and going. They simply fracture the stillness of the desert environment.
