First Freeze

This one or . . .
It was 31 degrees Fahrenheit when Becca and I headed out this morning, with a wind chill of 18 degrees.  Fortunately for us the wind died when we got out to the mountain.  There were only a few cars in the Sunset Parking area when we began hiking, and only a few more on our return.  Becca spotted our buddy Jimmy before I did; he was about an eighth of the way up the mountain on the west side.  He waved to us before turning back to the arduous task of trekking straight up the Tortoise.
this one (and why?)

Grey skies

Despite appearances, no real chance of rain (or snow)

Even further away from the Tortoise

I expected a freeze last night here, Packrat, but it only got down to the mid-30s. We still haven't had a freeze, and up near the house, we haven't even had a killing frost (based on the still-green leaves of my basil plants in containers on the patio). It seems like your temperatures are a bit less moderate than ours--you get colder in the winter and (definitely) get hotter in the summer. Perhaps it's because we're within 100 miles of the ocean.

At least that cold wind produced some dynamic clouds.

So I guess that polar vortex didn't hit where you are, Scott. I thought it was going to reach your area. Yes, I'll bet the ocean has something of a moderating effect on your weather at this time of year.
