Holy Day in the Desert

Departing from the Monte Vista (mountain view) trailhead
Dr. K, Becca and I did a long hike two-thirds of the way around Tortugas Mountain this morning, leaving from the east side parking area.  There were a few other cars when we got there, and we bumped into several outdoor enthusiasts on the trail--mostly runners, but there was one mountain biker.  We cut the hike short--about a mile less than we usually do--because it's still quite hot these summer days, and we didn't want to push it.  No sense making an enjoyable hike into an unbearable desert trek.

A colorful blossom (they are "blossoms" because they produce fruit)

I like the three photos of the barrel cactus, with the last one really showing the beauty of the blossoms.
