Yesterday's Rain

Barrel Cactus buds
Yesterday--late afternoon into early evening--we had quite a rainstorm.  Local meteorologists had predicted a slight chance of precipitation, but we got a lot more than expected; there was flooding in parts of Las Cruces and El Paso.  The result of the storm was lingering high humidity this morning, but the discomfort was moderated by a steady breeze that provided excellent evaporative cooling.  Becca and I did our normally long hike west of the mountain, and we ran into a few Chihuahuan Desert critters.  The baby cottontail pictured here was right off the trail, and Becca looked directly at it before passing by.  I stopped to photograph the cute bunny, and it didn't move a muscle while I stood nearby.  Smart little rabbit.

We're overrun with rabbits this year--they're everywhere--despite the fact that we've got a huge fox population, too. Go figure. Your bunny is really cute, but I wonder how smart it is for a bunny to just remain motionless; ours do the same thing but they're doing it out on the lawn or adjacent to the driveway. It's probably a highly adaptive behavior in brushy situations, but not necessarily in the 'burbs. The jackrabbit ear image caught me off guard, too, but once you pointed out what the image represented, I went back to review it again and could see it immediately. And, the second last image made it look like Becca was in an ocotillo prison cell!

Yes, that image of the ocotillo and the Becca does make it appear that she's inside of a prison cell. It's a nice photo, Packrat.
