Black Friday Hike

Starting down canyon
Dr. K, Becca and I exercised our option not to go shoppping on Black Friday, opting instead for a hike into Solado Canyon down to Bridal Veil Falls (see video).  At first it was extremely windy, but the wind pretty much subsided about a third of the way into the trek.  We spent the rest of the hike marveling at the wonderful weather and the majestic panoramas.  We ran into six other hikers and a gorgeous white dog--not bad for a beautiful day in the mountains.    Becca, as usual, was enthralled by the entire outing.

This is becoming one of my favorite trails.

Bridal Veil Falls looks more substantial in your video than it did in your still images last time. Sorry for giving you a hard time, Packrat.

On Thanksgiving morning, as I was preparing breakfast and listening to the radio, the announcer said that drought conditions nationwide had worsened and had now spread to 46 of the 48 conterminous states. I know that we'd be hurting here if we were still in the growing season; our creek is very low. We haven't had any rain since the passage of Hurricane Sandy, and that was three weeks ago. Plus, though Sandy's winds were very destructive, the storm wasn't accompanied by much rain (a mixed blessing).

Yes, the water flowed a bit more substantially at Bridal Veil Falls this time, Scott. I'm worried about the drought, too. Around here I've heard people talking about the aquifers being depleted significantly due to ranchers and farmers drawing on wells because their supply of surface water from Elephant Butte Reservoir has been really meager.
