Saturday on the Rim Trail

Setting off on the Rim Trail
This morning we did a long stretch of section two of the Rim Trail, which stretches along the western edge of the Sacramento Mountains in southern New Mexico.  It was beautiful hiking weather, about 45 degrees Fahrenheit--no wind.  Although we heard a few cars as we approached Parking Area 2 on the Sunspot Highway, we saw no one.  For two hours it was as if we had the entire place to ourselves.  Pretty remarkable for a Saturday morning.  When we got back to Parking Area 3--where we'd left our car--people were just pulling up to begin their outing.  Lucky us.

It's always nice to have the trail to ourselves, especially on such a beautiful day.

This sounded and looked like a wonderful hike.

The image of the aspens against the sky is, of course, striking!

Was the milepost damaged by bears or just weathered? In upstate Pennsylvania, such damage likely would be the result of porcupines chewing away at the wood after someone's sweaty palms had deposited a seemingly insignificant slick of salt.

Thanks for the compliments. Much appreciated. Hard to say about the mile marker; these things are pretty ancient, but it does appear to be chewed up pretty good. I'm going to blame some hungry hiker who made the mistake of doing the entire 30 miles of the Rim Trail without carrying enough provisions.
